Shingle Roofing refers to a roof covering that overlap, and they mostly find application in sloping roofs. They can be made of different materials, but asphalt is the most preferred material. There are many functions of shingle roofing and one major one is to improve the aesthetic properties of the roof and this is why shingles are majorly used in residential buildings. The different types of shingle roofing according to materials that can be used are:

Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt Shingles are made of different materials that are combined to form the shingles. Some of the materials are fiberglass, asphalt (which is a water-resistant material and helps when it comes to water runoff in roofs and preventing water from seeping into the building), sealants (in form of adhesives to join all the material together and keep them in place even after installation), granules (for this, hard rock is crushed to specifications and they are applied to the surface of natural stones. The granules can come in different colors). Asphalt Shingles are very easy to work with as they are lightweight which is an important factor to consider when selecting roofing materials.

Wood Shingles
Wood Shingles are made from woods like redwood, pine, white oak. Redwood is the preferred material in this case as it is very resistant to rot which is needed seeming that the material would be exposed to different types of weather conditions. Other wood species like pine are properly treated before they are used for as shingles. Wood shingles especially redwood shingles require little maintenance and the important thing is to seal them properly so that they don’t undergo warping or rotting over time. They are also very durable and when installed and maintained properly can last for up to 30 years.

Metal Shingles
Metal shingles can be made of different metals like steel, aluminum, copper, or even zinc alloy. The downside of using metal shingles for your roofs is that it is expensive but apart from that, in terms of durability and resistance to water to fire, metal is a very good material. Metals are also very durable, are lightweight (which is very important to note), and recyclable (for people particular about the environment). They have a very long life span and overall, are worth their cost. Purpose of Shingles
Shingles have many functions apart from increasing the aesthetic appeal of the roof. It also serves as an additional sealant for roofs in the sense that it is additional coverage for the roof as it prevents wind and water from penetrating the roof. Another function of shingle in roofs is that it increases the durability and life span of the roof. It also helps with runoff water and roof drainage. Shingles also greatly influence the energy efficiency of a building so the material should be properly considered.
